If you use the Blix theme, WordPress 2.1 breaks the navigation bar in the header. Fortunately, it’s an easy fix; see the details at All Things Seen and Unseen. Be sure the read the comments.

I went to the WordPress theme directory to “shop” for a theme to replace the default. There were almost too many to choose from, especially considering that the majority was average, at best. Still, the good ones are really good, and for me it came down to Wuhan, Rin, and Blix (out of the ones I saw). I plan on trying them out for a while before picking one to modify. The author of Wuhan (Meng Gao) has a really interesting site called Authentic Asian. Ditto for the author of Rin (Khaled Abou Alfa); his site is Broken Kode.
As for content, I spent my subway ride home deciding what it is I want to accomplish (initially anyway) with this website. I think I’ll start by writing down any thoughts that I think might be potentially useful to some poor soul who found these pages. Once I have enough thoughts on the same topic, I’ll combine and organize them into a coherent article. I do a good deal of reading and research on various areas of life, and I’m always elated when I find a page where someone describes his/her experience with the topic I’m researching. It reminds me of that Dane Cook skit where he talks about how you never leave your shopping cart unattended in the supermarket because someone who needed the exact same stuff might find the cart and go, “What? JACKPOT! This is everything I wanted!”
Hopefully it’ll happen with my website once I get enough information on here.

So I finally decided to get a domain name and do some things with it, like start a blog, write some articles, maybe put my resume online (does this do anything other than make me more vulnerable to identity theft?). Amazingly enough, the domain name I wanted, andycho.com, was still not taken, so I didn’t have to resort to a .org, .net, .xxx or what have you these days.
I didn’t have any experience with domain/web hosting except watching those GoDaddy.com commercials, so it’s was time to do some research. I tried to figure out which content management system and/or blogging system I would use, and there seems to be a lot of good ones, including WordPress, Drupal, CommunityServer, etc. I found Chris Garrett’s reviews and Reno’s review very useful. Drupal seemed like overkill to me, so I decided on WordPress. Their site has a page of recommended hosting providers. In the end, I went with BlueHost due to their numerous awards.
My account with BlueHost (as well as the domain name) was up and running about fifteen minutes after I paid. I messed around a bit with the setup and I also placed a call to their technical support… I had a simple question but I was curious how good their support really is. The guy was well informed and it only took about a minute to wait through the queue to get to him. The best thing was that the automated phone system had no annoying music or commercials and it told you how many people were on the waiting list ahead of you. Gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. Why can’t they install that system at the credit card companies?
Next step: I need to pick a better theme or code it myself, and then start writing!
